The FCC chairman may be threatening the broadcast networks over their coverage of the Iran war, but Saturday Night Live again went with a cold open that skewered Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth for their lack of planning for the fallout from the Middle East intervention.
Over the past week, as gas prices have shot up, the president has tried to offer a counter-argument, while Hegseth has blamed the media for reporting on the negative side of the war.
In the skit, Trump (James Austin Johnson) appeared at a gas station as a family grapples with $5 a gallon.
“You might remember me from such campaign promises as lower gas prices and no more wars,” Trump said. “We love to make promises because a promise is just a lie that hasn’t happened yet.”
Gas prices averaged about $3.60 per gallon on Friday, up from $3.25 a week ago and $2.94 a month ago, per AAA.
“Oh yes, gas prices, which are very high because of war with Iran, which is where they make gas,” Johnson’s Trump said. “I wish someone would have told me that.”
“But we will win this war because Iran is old and nobody likes them. Iran is like ballet and opera, and we’re Timmy Chalamet.” The audience laughed. “Wow. Kicking them while they’re down,” Trump said.
Hegseth later appeared from the backseat of the family’s car, with beer cans spilling out everywhere. As he was at the Pentagon press briefing on Friday, Hegseth (Colin Jost) was plenty angry over news coverage.
“The president called me here today to give you news on the way. Okay, so listen ip. The news is we won. Hashtag winning. So stop asking me all about it!”
“The real problem is all you gaybies … all you gaybees in the media are completely unpatriotic.”
“He went on. “Okay, they’re using what I do and say to make me look like a fool.”
Then Trump interjected, “Been there. I’ve been there before.”
Hegseth continued, “The press says we bombed a school. I just blacme it on the Ah-a-ah-ah-ayatollah. And also on the alcohol.”
“Oh, you dweebs, stop saying the Strait of Hormuz is closed. It’s wide open. Sure, there’s a bunch of land mines floating in the water, water mines I guess. But if you’re an oil tanker and you’re driving it and you see one of the mines, just do what I used to do at every DUI checkpoint. Close your eyes and gun it!”
In reality, Hegseth devoted part of his opener at Friday’s briefing with a media critique, lashing out at the way that cable news chyrons are written while singling out CNN. “The sooner that David Ellison takes over the network, the better.”
Earlier on Saturday, after Trump complained about news headlines about the war, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr threatened the licenses of broadcasters, warning that they should “course correct” before their renewals come up. The implication was that they had to change the way that they are covering the action in the Middle East. Carr has prevoously lashed out at late night comedians and SNL as well.
