Shots fired at US embassy in Toronto amid Iran war terror fears

Shots have been fired at the US embassy in Toronto, local police say.

Bullets struck the consulate building at around 5.30am Tuesday. No injuries were reported.

No suspect was apprehended at the scene but Toronto Police said it found evidence that a gun had been discharged.

Television footage showed at least two marks left by bullets in a glass door at the building’s entrance.

The consulate sits on University Avenue, a busy thoroughfare leading to Ontario’s legislature that has become a regular flashpoint for anti-US protests, including demonstrations over the weekend against the war with Iran.

The attack comes just days after a gunman opened fire at a packed bar in Austin, Texas, killing two people and wounding 14 others in what the FBI is now investigating as a possible terror attack linked to the US strikes on Iran.

The shooter, Ndiaga Diagne, 53, a Senegalese-born naturalized US citizen, was killed by police after opening fire on patrons from the street before turning his weapon on pedestrians nearby.

Investigators found a Quran in his car and he was pictured wearing a shirt bearing the words ‘Property of Allah’ on the day of the attack.
