However, it looks like this weekend will be your last chance to stream one of the most popular movie musicals on the service: Moulin Rouge. This 2001 jukebox musical has been credited with helping to revive the genre 25 years ago and if you haven’t made time to watch this film yet, or just haven’t revisited it in a while, here’s your sign to do so before it leaves the service on Friday, March 13th.

What is Moulin Rouge about?

A swoon-worthy romance with a distinctive visual flair

Moulin Rouge is a jukebox musical directed by Baz Luhrmann that follows an English writer, Christian, who falls in love with the courtesan Satine, who lives and works at the famed Moulin Rouge in Paris but dreams of becoming a legitimate actress. The pair’s forbidden romance threatens the iconic establishment, which has fallen on hard times, and Satine and Christian find themselves having to make terrible choices in order to keep their dreams alive.

The film features several recognizable songs from the 20th century, including Your Song by Elton John, Like a Virgin by Madonna, and a truly stirring tango rendition of Roxanne by The Police.

The film was a critical hit upon release and was nominated for eight Academy Awards in 2001, winning one for Art Direction and another for Costume Design. The film has enjoyed an enduring legacy in pop culture and even inspired a stage musical of the same name that has been running on Broadway since 2019.

Where can you stream Moulin Rouge after it leaves Netflix?

Though there has been no announcement about where Moulin Rouge might be able to stream after it leaves Netflix, the film was produced by 20th Century Fox, which is owned by Disney. So while we don’t know for sure, it seems likely that the next streaming destination for this title will likely be Disney+ and Hulu.

The film is also available to rent and purchase digitally from all the usual places, including Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home and Google Play.
