A boy of 14 accused of beating an elderly dog walker to death sent a friend two ‘laughing’ emojis and said he was ‘chilling’ after reading that the octogenarian had been critically injured, a court heard today.
The teenager is charged with the murder of Bhim Kohli, 80, who died 24 hours after he was allegedly punched and kicked repeatedly last September.
The retired factory owner was also racially abused and struck around the face with a ‘slider’ sandal while on his knees as part of the ‘act of pure violence’ – which was filmed on a mobile phone by a laughing 12-year-old female friend of the balaclava-clad boy, it is claimed.
That girl, who also can’t be named, is accused of manslaughter after prosecutors said she ‘encouraged’ the alleged fatal assault.
Grandfather Mr Kohli was discovered lying in agony in the park, just yards from his home, by his son and daughter, and was rushed to hospital – but lost his fight for life the following evening.
This afternoon, jurors were taken through the boy’s mobile phone activity in the day after the alleged assault on Mr Kohli in Leicester’s Franklin Park – when the pensioner was still fighting for his life – which included dozens of text and social media messages, calls, and internet searches.
Hapreet Sandhu KC, prosecuting, said he first looked up ‘Franklin Park news’ at 1.23pm – followed 10 seconds later by a search for ‘Adele tickets’.
He then read a BBC news story entitled ‘Man, 80, in critical condition after attack’ before sending a group message on Snapchat to the other young people he had been with, asking ‘What one of you got arrested? It says someone has been arrested’.

Quizzed two hours later by another friend if he was ‘s****** it’, the boy replied with two ‘laughing’ emojis and the message ‘Nah, chilling bro’.
Leicester Crown Court heard further friends messaged the boy on Snapchat asking about the incident.
He told one, ‘I did that. I watched him pull a knife on a girl and hit her. I didn’t mean to batter him. It was one hit and then my anger turned in. I regret it man, I do. I f**** my life up. Everything is gone. I am sorry bro, I am.
‘A girl then described the boy as a ‘vile b******’, before he messaged his mother to say, ‘Police are looking for me because of Franklin (Park). I can’t come back tonight.’
She replied: ‘Going on the run ain’t gonna help anything, just come home and get it sorted please. I love you all the world and more, you are my son. If you don’t want me stressed come home, just making it worse for yourself, come home.’‘
The boy subsequently asked a friend if he could stay at his house, telling him he was ‘in a Fed (police) chase’, and ‘had 10 officers after him’.
He went on to make further claims – which prosecutors say are false – that Mr Kohli had produced a knife, to other Snapchat users, but was told by one: ‘He’s 80. You don’t do that to an old man. You don’t do that. You’re vile.’
At 8.21pm – around 25 minutes before Mr Kohli died – he sent a laughing emoji to pals and said: ‘Feds know it is me.
Got my name and picture.’Told by one that he was ‘f*****’, he responded: ‘I know’.Mr Sandhu said the boy was arrested outside his home later that evening.

Jurors have heard the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, wrote a letter after he was charged in which he said he had been dumped by his girlfriend and ‘just needed anger releasing’ (pictured, a message to Mr Kohli’s family left with flowers near the site of the attack)
Earlier, the court heard the boy had been seen running from the park in the moments after the alleged attack last September before telling friends ‘he’s on the floor’.
The pair’s trial was this morning shown a video interview with a friend of the defendants who was with them immediately before and after the incident.
The 13-year-old witness told officers how he and two other girls fled the scene when they saw the boy approach Mr Kohli because they knew ‘how he is’ and feared he might ‘start on him or be mean to him or something’.
He told the court the next time they saw the pair, the boy ran out of the park with his hands on his head, saying, ‘He’s on the floor’.
He added: ‘We got to shops and were like, ‘What have you done?’ The boy kept talking about how he was on the floor, and after that happened I didn’t want to be with the group anymore, so I went to another friend’s house then I went to my grandma’s house, and then I went home.’

The court has previously seen a series of CCTV recordings taken before and after the assault on Mr Kohli, which took place at around 6.30pm on September 1.
They showed the pensioner walking into the park with his pet dog Rocky, before the boy and girl – now aged 15 and 13 respectively, enter three minutes later with another boy and two girls.

Jurors also viewed three separate short video clips found on the accused girl’s phone in which Mr Kohli was first seen being struck around the face by the boy with his slider, then walking and shouting, before a final clip showed him lying still on the ground.
Mr Sandhu has told the court that in between the last two clips, the boy launched an ‘intense’ attack that led to Mr Kohli suffering fatal injuries.
The boy and girl were arrested the following day and subsequently charged with murder and manslaughter respectively – which they deny.
A post-mortem examination revealed the cause of Mr Kohli’s death to be a neck injury ‘causing trauma to the spinal cord’, with the OAP also suffering broken ribs, which Mr Sandhu said were consistent with him being punched and kicked repeatedly.
Mr Kohli was married to wife Satinder Kaur, 73, who is listening to evidence from the public gallery, three children, and two grandchildren.Because of their young age, the two defendants are sitting on benches at the rear of the court instead of in the dock. The trial continues.
