Our turbulent love/hate relationship with technology is something we all grapple with on a daily basis, and that struggle has now made it to the lovable old-school “Toy Story” gang in the first trailer released for Pixar’s “Toy Story 5.”
It’s been seven years since director Josh Cooley’s (“Transformers One”) “Toy Story 4,” and here we’re re-introduced to a Woody suffering from male pattern baldness who joins forces with Buzz Lightyear to rescue Andy’s little sister, Bonnie, from the eerie glow of her addictive smart tablet. Along for the timely topical adventure are the usual fan favorites: Jessie, Forky, Slinky Dog, Hamm, Trixie and a legion of Buzz Lightyear action figures all striving to stop tech from taking over kids’ lives.
Supporting voice talent includes Craig Robinson as Atlas, a cheerful talking GPS hippo toy; Shelby Rabara as the excitable camera toy Snappy; Scarlett Spears as the sweet and shy 8-year-old Bonnie; Mykal-Michelle Harris as Blaze, an independent 8-year-old girl who loves animals; Ernie Hudson as Combat Carl; Keanu Reeves as Canadian daredevil toy Duke Caboom, and Matty Matheson as the tech-fearing toy Dr. Nutcase.
What makes us highly optimistic about this fifth installment about how tech is reshaping kids’ emotional growth is the fact that Academy Award-winning Pixar veteran Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton wrote the “Toy Story 5” script and also directs. Stanton was awarded two Best Picture Oscars for directing 2003’s “Finding Nemo” and 2008’s “WALL-E.” He also helmed 2016’s “Finding Nemo” sequel, “Finding Dory,” which at the time became Disney/Pixar’s highest grossing animated feature ever.
After the billion-dollar box office bonanza of Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” in 2024, “Toy Story 5” has its work cut out for it when it’s unleashed into theaters on June 19, 2026.
