Shia LaBeouf and Mia Goth began dating in 2012, and their relationship timeline since then has been chaotic to say the least. They sparked engagement rumors in 2015, married in 2016, filed for divorce in 2018, got back together in 2020, and welcomed a daughter, Isabel, in 2022.
And this week, the status of their relationship became a topic of discussion once again after Shia was accused of “terrorizing the city” of New Orleans, leading to his arrest. But, before we get into that, it’s worth highlighting that this isn’t the first time that Shia’s been at the center of public controversy in the past decade.
As I’m sure you know, Shia became famous as a child actor, and in his adult life, he’s struggled with alcoholism and has a long history of alcohol releated arrests. On top of that, his ex-girlfriend, FKA Twigs, accused him of “relentless” abuse in a 2020 lawsuit, which included claims that he strangled her, knowingly infected her with a sexually transmitted infection, and threatened to crash a car they were both in.
At the time, Shia claimed that many of the allegations were untrue, but he said in a statement that he needed to “accept accountability” for his actions. In a subsequent 2022 podcast interview, he confessed that he “hurt” Twigs and “hurt many other people” in the process.
Which brings us to New Orleans, where the 39-year-old was arrested in the early hours of the morning on Feb. 17 following a physical altercation with two men, whom he’d allegedly been calling anti-gay slurs. Videos of Shia fighting and partying in New Orleans have been circulating online, including a recent clip of him dancing on Bourbon Street after his arrest, with his jail release paperwork in his mouth.
Mia and Shia have always been incredibly private throughout their relationship. Now, in the wake of his latest arrest, a source has spoken to People about their “complicated” dynamic, alleging that they broke up for good last year.
“They weren’t getting along and had a lot of drama last year,” the insider said, revealing that Mia “encouraged” Shia to move out of their shared home in Los Angeles, to where he now lives in New Orleans.
“She loves him, but she also doesn’t need him. She’s very independent. She has her own life, her own career, and her priority is their daughter,” the source continued, adding that he “loves their daughter and stays in touch.”
For the record, neither Mia nor Shia have commented on these quotes, or their breakup in general. But we’ve reached out to both of their reps for comment, and we’ll keep you updated.
