This is no BS advice for experienced professionals to help you land your next role faster.
If you’re over 50 and applying through job boards or portals, you’re not job hunting. You’re donating data into a black hole. Stop tweaking your resume for the ATS. I want to give you a couple of different strategies to use for a veteran professional. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally. I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
Step number one: your resume isn’t a history book. It’s a marketing brochure. Delete everything before 2010. If a skill doesn’t solve a problem they have today, it’s baggage. You weren’t selling years of experience. We don’t want to buy that anymore. That sounds expensive and slows things down. We’re selling shorter ramp-up times and reduced risk.
Secondly, stop looking for full-time jobs and instead look for problems. Reach out to CEOs of mid-cap companies. Don’t ask for a job. Offer a fractional project. It bypasses HR, avoids the agent screening filters, and lets you prove your return on investment without the overhead of a benefits package. Once you’re in the building, the consulting assignment usually turns into a C-suite offer or at least a senior role.
Third, your LinkedIn shouldn’t look like a tombstone. Post three times a week about future trends in your industry. If you aren’t talking about AI or automation impacts in your niche, you sound like a relic. Control the narrative. You don’t want to come across as being a geezer, right? You want to come across as being a problem solver.
I have a lot more to help you at JobSearch.Community. Come over to the website, go exploring. There’s a lot there that can help you. Become an insider. Get a resume or LinkedIn profile critique. In addition, if you have a big interview coming up, I have a couple of different ways to prep you for it that will definitely make your search easier.
