By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Since launching my podcast, “No BS Job Search Advice Radio,” in November 2010, I’ve been telling people that the skills needed to find the job are different than those needed to do a job. Let me explain why it’s harder to search for work than do work.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a career coach who helps people with their job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading, doing a variety of things related to workforce success. Why is it more difficult to search for a job than do a job is the question I was asked.
It sounds like right out of my introduction to my podcast, No BS Job Search Advice Radio, the number one podcast on Apple Podcasts for job search because I’ve said this for years. I started that podcast in November 2010. As I record this, it is October 2019.
I’ve been saying the same thing over and over again and I can tell you exactly why. And the answer is, how often do you job search? Every year? Every few years? If you’re a contractor doing temp work, every month? Every few months? And the different elements of job hunting, resume writing, interviewing, negotiating, second interviews, third interviews, branding yourself. How often do you do those? Malcolm Gladwell popularized the idea of the 10,000 hour rule and the concept is that 10,000 hours of dedicated effort focused in on a task under the tutelage of an expert allows you to become one yourself.
And Gladwell points to the example of the Beatles in Hamburg as being an incubator for their success. They spent weeks and months performing together as a way of trying to develop their expertise. And for those of you who job hunt and you’ve done how many hours of practice and how much oversight has anyone ever given you about your interviewing, for example, and even if you’re a hiring manager and you think you know how to interview because you’ve been interviewing people for yourself for years, as you’ll discover at some point or have already discovered, when you’re on the other side of the desk, it’s a completely different experience.
You know what you look for. You don’t know what other people look for. I’ll simply say that you don’t have a lot of experience with job hunting and in the course of doing your work, you’ve gained a lot of expertise in your profession.
That’s the real difference. The skills needed to find the job are different than those needed to do a job and, as such, you don’t have a lot of experience. You need coaching.
You need advice. I’m not here to sell myself. That’s what I happen to do professionally.
I’ll just simply say you need help because this is not your strength. Hope you found this helpful. I’m Jeff off The Big Game Hunter and visit my website, TheBigGameHunter.us. There’s much more there that you can watch, listen to or read to help you find work more quickly.
