WhThe Best Way to Discuss Metrics in Your Resumeat should I put in the subject of an email when I applied for a job? There are so many possibilities!
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m the head coach for JobSearch.Community. And the question for today is, what should I put in the subject of an email while applying for a job? Now, for most of you . . . actually, there are two answers. We’ll start with the one that is for most of you, you’re seeing something online, you’re seeing an ad of some sort, you’re seeing something that the company or recruiting firm has cast a net for, and you’re applying for a position that way.
So, the subject line might read with the title of the position so that this way it’s clear to the reader what it is you’re applying for. If the company is asking you to include a job code or some other indicator that specifies what kind of . . . which job this is in particular that you’re applying for, include that as well. So, as an example, it might say, job 2714 accountant and mention a line of business.
And, thus, what you’re doing is making it clear to the reader why it is that you’re sending the email. Because, after all, you have to remember their inbox. You’re thinking of one email that you’re sending.
They’re receiving a lot of them in the course of the day. So, you’re helping them do triage on their inbox and they can go, oh, a resume for that job and act from that. However, there’s the second condition that people have when they’re applying for a job.
And that is you’re referred by someone. Now, in that instance, what you say is, I’m referred by so and so. And, thus, they know that you’re just not a stranger who’s submitting a resume for a position.
You’re someone who has an introduction to them. And then you use the body of the email in both cases to stake out why it is that you’re qualified to do this job. So, it isn’t a hard letter.
But what it is, is one where you’re trying to make it clear to the reader why it is that you’re there and why it is that you’re emailing them. I hope you found this helpful. And visit and join JobSearch.Community. Have a great day.
