They always ask why you left your last job. It’s important for you to turn the tables on them, too.
You know how they always ask you why you left your last job? Have you ever thought of turning the tables on them? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for No BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
For years, I have joked about how everyone lies on an interview. You lie, they lie, everyone is positioning themselves for major advantage. Okay, I’ll call it posturing. You posture for advantage, they posture for advantage, and they always ask, “Why did you leave your last job?” And they make you feel guilty.
Now here’s a fun scenario: why don’t you ask them? I’m not talking about the hiring manager, I’m certainly not talking about HR, but when you meet with members of the team, why don’t you ask them when they ask, “So do you have any questions for us?” “Was there anyone in this role previously? Yeah? Why did they leave? What went on that prompted them to leave?” “Well, they left for a better opportunity.” “What made it a better opportunity?”
And even if they don’t answer, their non-answer is going to tell you a lot because they’re hiding something if it’s embarrassing. “Oh, they left for more money.” Okay, you can accept that, right? But sometimes their body language will tell you something about the hiring manager that’s going to be useful to you. Maybe when they give you the looks to the side like they’re trying to get advice from someone, that’s telling you something. And you know, that’s worth a million dollars to you to avoid making a mistake.
I have a lot more available to help you with JobSearch.Community. Come over to the site, hire me to coach you, get access to all my content for free as part of the program.
