My boss purposely makes all interview candidates wait 1 hour past the scheduled interview time. This is their “filtering” method, as they refuse to consider anyone who leaves during the 1+ hour wait. Is this legal?
Yeah, it’s legal, it’s stupid, and it’s not illegal. And I say this because there’s no law that prevents people from being kept waiting, but it’s stupidity. Like, what person sits for one hour and allows themselves to be treated disrespectfully?
You know, I do remember a time where I was still doing search, and someone had taken over in a function with my client, and the replacement person asked me to come out and meet with him. So I drove two hours to his office, was kept waiting for an hour, and I sat there and I sat there. And 20 minutes into the wait, I walked over to reception and I asked, “I’m curious: Number one, is this typical? I’m hoping not. And number two, how long do you think he’ll be?” And I got my answer, and it wound up being 35 minutes. I received a lot of apologies, yada yada yada.
I wonder what it would be like for that hiring manager if an applicant kept them waiting for one hour. I also wonder what kind of job this is that he or she wants to hire a sheep—someone who’s willing to sit for one hour’s time without any sort of explanation for a delay—that this is a good thing to do. So, you know, it’s not illegal; it’s just stupid.
And I would say to you, well, I hope that people who are kept waiting post reviews on Glassdoor or anywhere else indicating that this person does that. And you know, it should get exposed for what it is: stupidity.
