What do I do NOW?

After a long job search, I finally received an offer that I accepted. It wasn’t a great position, but I need to get back to work. Now I have another position that was proposed to me. I have an offer from them, and I’m not sure whether I should take it. It’s a much better fit for what I do than the job I took.

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for No BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier. You know, the firm that let you go that prompted you to have the long job search—well, they made a business decision. They weren’t doing it personally because they hated you, at least from what I can tell. They made a business decision.

You need to make a business decision too. What serves you as the CEO of your career? Is it staying where you are or going to something that fits you better, that suits you better? I’m pretty sure you know it’s the latter. It’s taking a position that suits you better so that this way you feel great about going to work and not just doing a job, you know, a job.

So I’ll just conclude by saying don’t fall for the idea of company loyalty. Companies don’t have loyalty to you. They hire you to do a job; they don’t hire you to be their best friend. You’re not working for a company; you’re working for a manager who works for a company. That manager can do next to nothing to save your butt if there are going to be staff reductions. All it’s going to be is math. You are math to them. You are not an employee who means so much to them.
