Millennials have a reputation for decorating exclusively in gray, white, and farmhouse chic — but one millennial, u/Mewpasaurus, was not buying it. After moving into a mountain home and starting a DIY design journey, they wondered whether that aesthetic actually reflects how their generation lives. So they asked fellow millennials to share photos of their real homes. From colorful maximalism to cozy, lived-in spaces, the responses proved there is no single millennial interior design style:

“Our interior design plan is putting stuff wherever and trying to keep as organized as possible. Throw a map and an anime poster up. Where do we put this table? I don’t know — just put it in the middle, I guess. Don’t forget the cat tower.”

“My sitting room on a good day. It regularly gets too cluttered, and then I have to go around, put things in a box, and stick it in the loft.”

“I don’t like beige and cannot stand the gray scale. This is my bedroom. We’ve got a pretty maximal gallery wall and lamps.”

“I decorated my basement to look like a medieval tavern. Still working on it, but it’s always improving!”

“Here’s our dining room! My husband is the one who does all the decorating in this house. I have added some plants to the console table since! We have a lot of white and open, with some contrasting blacks and pops of green.”

“Here’s my bedroom. I lean more masculine with design tastes and enjoy dark colors like Hale Navy (pictured here). I’ve done multiple rooms with focal walls, as well as color-drenched my dining room.”

“This is my office, and I feel like it pretty accurately captures my approach to design. I like earthy tones with lots of plants, personal touches of art, and other treasures like gifts, photos, and thrifted pieces. There are very few commercial pieces in the house. Lots of color!”

“I’m a big fan of color, texture, plants, and art. I have a home from the 1890s with some historic elements remaining, so that helps. Each room has its own palette, but they all pair well together.”
