The facts about networking and finding work.
The Best Way to Google Yourself
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m the head coach for JobSearch.Community . The question I received was, how important is networking when looking for a new job? Let me give you the facts. You make the decision about how important it is.
When you look at the statistics on how jobs are filled, you see some interesting things. Number one is, and I have to say these first numbers are not accurate for reasons that I’ll lay out for you. It starts off with statistics along the lines of 6% of positions, no, 3% of positions are filled as a result of responding to ads.
Then there’s 20% of positions that are filled as a result of recruiters. Now, I’ve seen statistics that are a little bit higher, a little bit lower on both of these. And the way I look at it is recruiters sometimes advertise.
So what I decided to do is combine the two numbers and say, you know, basically, that almost 30% of positions are filled as a result of recruiting and advertising. The balance are filled as a result of networking. And let’s break it down even further.
It’s not just 70% of positions are filled as a result of networking. 70% of the 70% are filled as a result of introductions to people that you didn’t know at the beginning of the search. 49%, almost 50% are filled that way.
With almost three quarters of jobs filled as a result of networking, do you have any doubt of its importance? And thus, when you only work with recruiters, when you only respond to job ads, that you’re taking the least effective route to finding work. Now, I’m not saying that networking is easy. For most of you, it’s like getting a root canal without anesthetic.
So I know how unpleasant this is for most of you. But so much of life involves confronting things that we find uncomfortable and doing better at them. At the beginning, you will probably be awful.
But this is a skill that you need to cultivate throughout your career in order to ensure that people are reaching out to you for opportunities. Networking is critical, not just simply in this job search, but in every job search that you have from this point on. Because if you network correctly, and you’re not just simply doing it when you’re looking for a job, if you’re doing it consistently, so you’re building your network, jobs are going to be coming to you, people will know about you, and they’ll be very happy to hear from you.
Always be networking. I want to repeat that. Always be networking.
