By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
When you begin to think of changing careers, it is important to take this first step.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, the head coach for JobSearch.Community. I have helped a lot of people over my career doing career changes. It’s a hard journey because our culture is one where we are impatient. We find it difficult to grind things out anymore. We want the quick fix; we want someone to tap us on the shoulder and solve our problem. Unfortunately, that isn’t the way life works.
It took years for cars to be invented, right? It took a long time for this thing to fly in the air that we call an airplane. Yet, we expect suddenly, someone is going to tap us on that shoulder and say, “You know, I’ve got a job for you,” even though no one knows we’re I’m looking for a job.
So, when I think about starting the career journey, I think in terms of finding someone to work with. Now, it doesn’t have to be a coach, although a coach makes it easier because they have the experience doing it. It can be another person making this change. It can be a different kind of change, but it’s a person with whom you can work and set objectives, goals, intentions, things along those lines. And the starting place, once you have this person, is to find someone who is supportive yet realistic. Here’s why.
There are so many people who will tell you you can’t do this thing. It’s impossible. You’ll never get the kind of money you want. . A whole host of reasons why you shouldn’t, can’t, and that it’s impossible. You need people who will help you and support you, and listen to you while you’re striving. They are not the people who will tell you, “See. I told you it’s hard and you shouldn’t be doing this.” You find someone in your circle of friends, or someone outside your circle, who is going through a transition, and you work together to create an individual plan, encouraging one another.
“Encouragement” doesn’t mean fake pats on the back. A fake, “You’re doing great.” You know, it’s the ability to say to someone, “Why didn’t you do that this week? You know, this is important to you. Why is it that you’re not moving forward with this? Why haven’t you set out with the same determination to do this as you do a normal job?”
“Oh, things got in the way . . . ” All sorts of excuses. But start off with the notion of
Who do you want to be?
Why is this important?
Understanding that for yourself, who can you talk to and get some advice from, and start working from there?
Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was New York, or LA or any other major city. This is a change and the change is going to take time. You don’t know what you don’t know yet but working with another person, again, whether it’s a coach or another person who’s going through a transition, who can support and encourage and not tell you, “give up on this dream,” his notion of being a (Fill in the blank), it’s a pipe dream.” You don’t need that.
What you need is encouragement, support, a kick in the butt from time to time from someone you learn to care I care about.
