I read yet another story about a big firm that was announcing a layoff a couple of months out, and there are people there who are going to make a stupid mistake that’s going to really hurt them. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
Let me tell you the mistake: they are going to wait to find out if they are laid off before they do anything. Why? Why are you going to trust that firm that’s laying off thousands of people that you’re going to be immune to a problem?
What you should be doing is getting your resume ready, getting your LinkedIn profile up to date, start talking to people about options that are available to you outside the firm so that in this way you’re not caught by surprise. The fact is you may be getting a package, but it takes time to get everything in place for you to be ready to job hunt. This is the time to do it.
Start reactivating your network, start talking to people, start learning stuff about job hunting that you don’t know because the skills needed to find a job are different from those needed to do a job. Don’t wait for the axe to fall on your neck and for you to be thrown out. It doesn’t make sense.
