In its film catalog, representation steadily climbed, with 8.6% of leads and co-leads identified as LGBTQ+ in 2023. The main cast reached 5.2%, while speaking roles stood at 2.4%. In series, the figures proved even more remarkable, with 52.4% of leads or co-leads in 2023 and 13.4% of main cast. These unprecedented numbers collectively mark Netflix’s queer revolution hitting a record-breaking high.
Netflix’s inclusion report also highlighted the growth of LGBTQ+ speaking characters in Netflix series, which increased from 2.5% in 2018 to 4.6% in 2023. Meanwhile, films maintained steady progress with 2.4% of speaking roles in recent years. Together, these figures showcase how Netflix has broadened space for diverse identities, making inclusive storytelling a more visible and measurable part of its content. In 2022, Netflix also celebrated LGBTQ+ storytelling by introducing a new curated collection.
