Why Should I Hire You When I Could Promote Someone?

The Top 10 Networking Strategies for An Executive Job Search
I want you to understand that this is just a red herring question. By interviewing you, they are already saying that they have already decided that there isn’t anyone internally that they are completely comfortable with. Your job in your interviews is to make them comfortable with your candidacy for this role.
You could be as blunt as I just was but I wouldn’t suggest. What I would suggest is a slightly different strategy. Say something along the lines of this, “I think it is a great quality that organizations have when they look internally at the people, evaluate and assess them and determine that there is an upward career path for them. (Note: you are complimenting them).
“However, what an organization has to do is decide who the best person is for this role. If you decide that the internal person is best, you should promote them. Conversely, if you look at people from the outside, and decide I’m the best person for you (and I certainly hope I am), then just understand that the organization is getting an individual that is superior to the internal candidate and is going to allow the firm to advance.”
See what you’re doing? You are complimenting them, encouraging them to hire the best person for the job, even if it is an internal person (that’s the modesty thing in there), and praising them at the end if they hire from the outside, having decided that that candidate is the best one.
