The City of Victoria Falls has teamed up with the Pristine Victoria Falls Society to recycle over 80 tonnes of food waste each month from local hotels and restaurants. The waste is used to produce maggots for poultry feed, helping cut landfill use while supporting eco-friendly farming.
The initiative is already showing success, aiming to ease waste management challenges, create green jobs, and protect the environment in the popular tourist destination. The partnership is also exploring ways to recycle other materials, including plastics.
“We look forward to engaging our local communities to do similar projects so that they can benefit from maggot production. In the long-term, this council will benefit in terms of self-reliance, saving space, and empowering residents through income-generating projects,” said Victoria Falls City Health Services Officer Mr. Michael Ncube.
