Clean the Sky – Eco-Friendly Dune Initiatives

Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

The Tottori Sand Dunes, one of Japan’s most iconic natural landscapes, are preparing to implement a new wave of eco-conscious tourism strategies aimed at balancing visitor engagement with long-term environmental preservation. This initiative seeks to position the dunes as a leading destination for sustainable travel, welcoming international visitors while prioritizing the protection of the region’s unique coastal ecosystem.

Once a relatively secluded natural site, the Tottori Sand Dunes now “attract approximately 1.3 million visitors annually.” While tourism has elevated the dunes’ profile, it has also contributed to ecological challenges, including the spread of invasive plant species that threaten the delicate interplay between sea, wind, and sand.

In response, local authorities and environmental stewards have developed “participatory ecotourism activities, such as dune restoration workshops and seed-collecting programs, encouraging tourists to actively contribute to conservation efforts while enjoying a low-impact, educational experience.”
