At an executive level, at a position in the C-suite, you’re not just taking a job, you’re entering into a business relationship with important implications for your career.
Every offer will be negotiable and every red flag deserves a deeper look. If the offer isn’t negotiable, that’s a red flag because they’re bringing you in to lead and to generate revenue for them or save money for them. Thus, there should be an impact and there should be a satisfactory benefit for you.
The key is never to assume that you have all the information. As former President Nixon said, trust but verify and get it in writing wherever possible. There’s really no reason why they can’t put it in writing unless they want to walk away from a commitment they made to you. So the long and the short of it is get what you want and get what you deserve. Always ask for clarification. Uncertainty that comes back to bite you later on is your fault, not theirs.
The result is take action now so that you land in this next role and are a happy, let me try that again, and are a happy camper for years to come.
