Tough Interview Questions: The Card Game Brainteaser

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

In this video, Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter poses a fun hedge fund brainteaser question set in a casino.

How to Run an Ideal Candidate Profile (ICP) Meeting

Hi, this is Jeff Altman, and The Big Game Hunter, and I want to bring you one of those hedge fund brain teaser questions that are designed to just frustrate you, annoy you. Um, and this one’s an easy one. Let me give you the scenario: You’re at a casino, and there’s a card game you’re going to play with a typical deck of 52 cards. The way the game works is if the dealer gets two black cards, uh, it goes into their pile. If you had two red cards, it goes into your pile. And if there’s a black and a red, it goes into the discard pile. The casino says to you, “How much do you want to play this game for?” And thus, you know, “How much do you want to win on this? How much are you willing to put at risk?”

So the question comes down to, “Do you think you can win this? Do you think you can wind up with more cards than the dealer here?” And the answer, interestingly enough, is no, no matter what you do. Because of the discard pile, that is, the, you know, the cards that are dealt out two cards at a time, one black, one red, you and the dealer are always going to wind up with an identical number of cards. So there’s no point in playing the game, and thus the amount that you want to wager is zero. Because what’s the point of sitting there for long periods of time knowing that no matter what you do, you can’t win anything and you can’t lose anything?

So I hope you found this brainteaser helpful. Uh, I know this has been asked on interviews before. Um, if you didn’t, you’re watching on YouTube, share it, leave a comment, click the like button, do something that lets people know that it was worthwhile. And then come over to my website, which is thebiggamhunter.us, and go explore it. I’ve got lots of content there to help you find work: uh, videos, podcasts, uh, complimentary subscription to my e-zine, uh, previous articles from the e-zine as well. A lot of good stuff to help you, so go over to thebiggamhunter.us and go exploring. By the way, at my site, you can pay what you want for, um, my books and guides to job hunting. I’d appreciate if you paid something because they do have value, uh, but if you can’t afford to pay what I’m asking for, which is really nominal, please pay something.
