Even before Superman’s four-legged furry friend made his way to theatres on July 11, James Gunn was confident of the love he would receive from fans, hence confirming a series of four short films based on him. The announcement about Krypto getting the Groot treatment with a series of four films came in February 2025, as was reported by Comicbook, with a fall window set for the offerings. According to a latest update by DCU Brief, it is now confirmed that the first of the four films is set to drop in September on HBO Max. This is the very arc that eventually gave us the I Am Groot show, produced by James Gunn, too.

For those unversed, Groot, the beloved tree from Guardians of the Galaxy, first took solo command of the TV screen in August 2022, with its initial season containing five shorts. The second season, meanwhile, arrived in September 2023, also containing five episodes. Following the same playbook, James Gunn said about the upcoming endeavor, while teasing the shorts based on the dog in February, that he himself cannot stop watching them, hence it is bound to impress fans when it arrives. Moreover, courtesy of Krypto’s appearance in Superman, a very meaningful trend has been recorded recently.

Krypto’s powers are not just for the big screen — his appearance in Superman has made a real-life impact.

Krypto’s superpowers leap beyond the screen with a presence that feels larger than life

While David Corenswet became limited to playing a superhero only on screen, Krypto changed lives outside the cinemas. He is now not just the Man of Steel’s sidekick — he has become a hero for all the dogs in need of shelters. According to The Wrap, dog training app Woofz reported that Google searches for dog adoptions “near me” surged by 500 percent after Superman‘s opening weekend, and search engine prompts like “rescue dog adoption near me” saw a 163 percent hike. People were also impressed with Krypto’s breed, with many scavenging the internet for a Schnauzer’s availability for adoption.

Woofz CEO Natalia Shahmetova, however, warned fans against committing to being a dog parent unless they feel wholeheartedly ready for it, as Krypto’s hype may fade with time, but their pets will remain with them forever. Well, the news was the second-best thing to come out of Superman after James Gunn confirmed the film is an immigrant story, amid the tense political climate on the matter in the US. And Krypto is only getting started now, with his scheduled TV adventure set to debut soon.
