The Phone Interview Two-Step: Nailing It Like a Pro

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I know you’re hustling hard out there, trying to land that sweet new gig. But getting that initial phone interview can be tricky biz.

Here’s the deal. Hiring managers are slammed these days. They’re looking for quick ways to weed through the piles of resumes to find their perfect match. That’s where the phone screen comes in. After a quick resume review, they’ll call you up to see if you’ve got the chops to make it to the next round.

And here’s the cold hard truth: their goal is to eliminate candidates at this stage. So how do you get past the phone screen of doom and into the final rounds? I’ve got you covered. Follow these pro tips and you’ll be well on your way.

Tip 1: Prep Like It’s the Real Deal

Treat that phone interview just like an in-person one. Research the crap out of the company. Practice your answers to common questions. Keep your responses crisp and compelling. Show ’em you did your homework and you’re the strategic thinker they need.

Tip 2: Set the Scene

Since you’re at home, create a professional atmosphere. Grab a quiet space, shut the door, and eliminate all disruptions. Silence your phone. Basically pretend you’re in your office ready to rock this thing.

Tip 3: Laser Focus

Listen closely to each question. Zero in on what they’re asking before you answer. Don’t ramble or get sidetracked. Address the question directly and keep your answers targeted.

Tip 4: Crank Up the Charm

This is your big chance to showcase your awesome personality. Use a warm, enthusiastic tone. Walk around to pump up your energy. Share real stories that show off your abilities. Basically convince them you’ll be a stellar culture fit.

That’s all you need for phone interview victory, my friends. With the right mindset and preparation, you’ll show ’em you have what it takes to move on to the next level. Now get out there and rock those calls!
