The Easiest Way to Negotiate a Higher Salary for Yourself
Are you someone who’s looking for a big salary increase, a $100,000 increase? Want to know the first question you need to ask yourself in preparation for this job search? That’s what I’m going to talk about today, because I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’ve worked with many people over the years and often they’ll come to me and go, “I’m I want to make a lot more money than what I’m making now and I’m worth it”. And the question I follow up with is, “What makes you worth that big increase than the next firm?“. And often the answer I get is a repetition of “I’m worth it”. No real specifics to it, “I need the money,” nonsense along those lines. And until you can really answer the question of what makes your value to the next firm worth that big bump, you’re not going to get it.
Now, the first thing you need to start doing is talking to people who are at the level that you aspire to, who earn the salary, the compensation that you’re aspiring to, to understand what it is that they do, what their experience is. So that in this way, you can start making corrections or comparisons to your background and theirs, and see where there’s a skills gap between you and them, and then work toward correcting it. There may not be a gap; you may actually be worth it. But unless you can answer that one question correctly, you’re not going to get it. You may get an increase, but you’re not going to get the huge increase that you’re looking for.
