By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Many times in life, making comparisons is something to avoid. But there is one circumstance where it is the smart strategy.
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, and I coach people to play their professional and personal games big. So often in life, people compare themselves to others. Money is an obvious example: the house, the furniture, the car. You know, this may be a US issue, but I don’t think it is. I think comparing oneself to others can be a very painful experience for you because invariably, there’s something that we find ourselves lacking in.
But there is one place where comparison does make sense, and that is comparing where you were in the past with where you are now, where you’re looking at your growth and development. So, for example, I’ll look at my son. A few years ago, he was struggling in school, and we got him coaching. Lo and behold, his attitude towards school has changed. His grades have gone up a lot. He gets more work done, and he’s really performing very well.
Is he perfect? No kid is perfect all the time. Of course, they have to go through their rebellious phase. He’s a teenager, of course. And as a result, it’s easy for us to look at the negative and not at the positives. And the big positive is seeing where he’s been and where he is now and the progress that he’s made.
The same is true for yourself. There are things that you’re doing a lot differently in a good way, and learning how to negotiate life and situations. Are you perfect? No. But if you’re working at getting better, if you can see your growth over the course of time, you know, this is true in relationship, it’s true in work, it’s true in skills. If you can see your improvement, that’s the place to make your comparison because change doesn’t happen suddenly. It’s not like one day you’re perfect. It involves small, incremental growth and steps that make matters better.
So, that’s my encouragement for you. That’s the place to make your comparison: to see where you’ve been, where you are now, so you can acknowledge your development, celebrate it, and then from there, work on the next steps. Again, small, incremental change makes all the difference.
I’m Jeff Alman. I hope you enjoy this. My website is JobSearch.Community. There’s a lot there, plus encouragement to help you play bigger.
