Let me share a tactic I used when I was growing up to develop more confidence and project more confidence as well, and it’ll help you on your job interviews. I’m Jeff Alen, the big game hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because they make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.

Now, when I was a teenager, I was very insecure, and that’s because I was kind of a nerd, I was a dweeb, any sort of negative term that you could use for me, I kind of fit that mold very, very, uh, well. I’ll just leave it at very, very what. What I started to do is develop a persona of someone who was confident, and I overacted. And my, the name of my persona was, and I know you’re gonna make fun of me for this, Lance Cool with a K. And Lance was very confident, and he’d walk into situations, and remember, this is pre-internet days obviously, and he would walk into situations and just act with confidence even though I didn’t feel confident, and that may be a tactic you use.

Now, I’m not saying you should name your persona, but the idea of pretending to be confident in order to be more confident, to learn how to be confident. Hey, look, you just have to act that way in order to communicate confidence on an interview, right? They don’t care if you really are. They just want to believe that you are.

So the long and the short of it is, try a persona of the confident person that will help you communicate what you really need to, which is your competence. Because remember, when firms hire, competence is only one thing they look for. They really want to see self-confidence because you inspire confidence in them that you’re the solution to a problem, that you care, that they can connect with you, that they’ve got chemistry with you, because ultimately they want to trust you, and projecting self-confidence is a big part of that.
