No BS Career Advice: June 29, 2025

“Every strike brings me closer to the next home run.” – Babe Ruth

I am not going to release an issue next weekend. On Thursday of this week, I’m having a bone marrow test as a way of checking whether a non-Hodgkins lymphoma I have has spread like it did with former President Biden. So far, testing has been good, and it is expected that radiation will be a treatment course for me that can lead to a cure. Please make prayers in whatever form you may practice for a few seconds that I have a successful outcome.

Engaging with Content: Likes, Comments, and Shares

Engaging with content strategically can significantly boost your presence in your professional network. When you take the time to comment thoughtfully on others’ posts, it demonstrates genuine interest and expertise, which helps you stand out. Over time, consistent, meaningful interactions can position you as a go-to resource or thought leader in your field.

People tend to pay more attention to those who actively participate in discussions because it signals credibility and a willingness to contribute valuable insights. This increased visibility often leads to more connection requests, invitations for collaborations, or opportunities that can accelerate your career or business growth.

Aside from expanding your network, deliberate engagement also reinforces your personal brand. When you leave relevant comments that resonate with your experience or perspective, you create a perception that you are knowledgeable and invested in your industry. This perception can build trust over time, making others more inclined to seek your opinion or involve you in projects.

Remember, on LinkedIn, comments need to be at least 12 words to get noticed by its systems to benefit the person who posted the original message and benefit you as being authoritative.

Engagement is a two-way street; as you interact with others, they are more likely to reciprocate, further expanding your reach. Ultimately, thoughtful commenting and active participation help embed your identity within your professional community, making you more noticeable amid the noise.

Moving beyond surface-level comments is key to establishing meaningful relationships and reinforcing your credibility. Instead of simply liking a post or leaving a bland “great job,” try to add depth by sharing your perspective, asking questions, or providing additional context.

For instance, if someone shares a challenge they faced, you could comment with a similar experience or suggest actionable ideas that helped in your practice. Doing this not only demonstrates your expertise but may also spark genuine conversation, making your contributions more memorable. Thoughtful comments can turn passive lurkers into active participants who see you as a valuable resource rather than just another profile in their feed.

Adding value through insightful comments involves a few simple principles. First, listen carefully to what others are saying and respond with relevant thoughts or questions. Second, avoid generic phrases like interesting or thank you—these can come across as insincere or lazy. Instead, focus on specific points that stood out to you and elaborate on them.

For example, if someone discusses a new industry trend, you could highlight its potential implications or share related data points. This not only permits others to engage more deeply with your comment but also showcases your critical thinking. Over time, such meaningful interactions can naturally cultivate your reputation as an engaged and knowledgeable professional.

Finally, remember that adding value is not just about your comments but also about the overall tone and intent. Be respectful, positive, and constructive, even when you disagree. Your goal should be to foster a community of shared learning rather than simply broadcasting your opinions.

When done consistently, this kind of engagement builds trust, encourages reciprocal interactions, and ultimately enhances your professional stature in online spaces.

My coaching and content are designed to help people find their next role more quickly than they might otherwise. Whether it is the information I freely share here or elsewhere, the video courses, books and guides I offer inexpensively, the podcast I continue to deliver (launched in November 2010, No BS Job Search Advice Radio has more than 3000 episodes), my YouTube channel, the course presentations I do, or the coaching I continue to do, people need help with finding work and succeeding at it.

After all, a lot of layoff notices are still coming through the feed. I encourage you to do something simple. Share their posts in your feed without expectation. Share mine because the information may help someone turn a corner and help them land.
