Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I got a great question from someone. It basically translates into how do you display your side job maybe your side business on your LinkedIn profile as well as your full-time job. Really easy.

However, I have to preface this. Usually, the best reason to display the side business is because it reflects the work that you want to be doing. There’s no point in having the side business get in the way of the real job if there’s no value to you from a professional standpoint.

For example, I’m a project manager for a bank and I have a side business selling stamps. What value is that to my career except if you want to show that you’re an entrepreneur and then from there a potential employer will question your entrepreneurship and whether it’s going to interfere with your real job. You follow? Now, if you’re a junior individual and you’re in a beginner job of some sort, the side business may be the real value and thus you place it in the profile as a job with a start date to present what it is that you do maybe you set up a company page for your business as well and start posting to it so that it gives some degree of traction it includes a website and things along those lines but what you want to do if you’re in a beginner job is to beef up that side job that’s actually in line with what you want your career to be.

For the veteran person, there’s rarely a benefit to it because it causes an employer to question whether you have the time or the dedication or whether your side business is more important to you, yada, yada, yada. Now, with that, if it falls in line with what you do and would be a benefit to you, again, you put it in the profile as another company with a start date and the present and the first line you talk about you know this is a a business you’ve been involved with for a number of years where off hours you’re involved with and you have to tell them it’s not a full-time thing or even a part-time job. It’s an off hours thing that you do.
