Alanis Morissette Reveals Her Sexuality, Comes Out Pansexual

Alanis Morissette is publicly addressing her sexuality.

“I’m pansexual, so, yeah,” the 90s icon, 52, said while appearing on the Tuesday, November 3, episode of “Handsome” podcast alongside cohosts Tig Notaro, Fortune Feimster and Mae Martin.

After Feimster, 46, asked the singer if the not-so-great way men treated her in the past (inspiring several of her most beloved songs) ever made her “want to be a lesbian at any point,” the singer confirmed she’s attracted to people of various genders.

“Wait, you’re not really pansexual, are you?” Notaro, 55, interjected, seemingly taken aback by Morissette’s omission and sexual orientation.

“I am,” Morissette clarified, before joking that she waited until near the end of the podcast episode to discuss her sexuality because she likes “to leave it for the epilogue.”

As LGBTQ+ representation in media becomes more common, some celebrities have pushed back against the expectation that they have to define their sexuality. “I don’t feel like it’s something I’ve ever felt like I have to explain about myself,” Harry Styles said of his sexuality in a 2017 interview with The Sun. “It’s weird for […]

For the uninitiated, pansexuality refers to a type of sexuality in which a person is attracted to other people for their individuality and regardless of their gender or sexual orientation.

The Jagged Little Pill singer has previously been open about her romantic encounters with women in the past, telling The Advocate in 2008 that a person exploring their sexuality is a “rite of passage.”

“What can I sell you about it?” she told the outlet at the time of comments she made while appearing on Howard Stern’s radio show. “I think it’s a beautiful rite of passage for everyone to play with their sexuality at some point, so I did exactly that. And it was great!”

The singer continued of how she has felt a connection to the LGBTQ+ community, “I’ve felt love from the gay community since I was really young because all my friends were gay. My first manager was gay, and I used to go to nightclubs with him in New York when I was 14. There’s a passion, a presence, and a curiosity with a lot of gay people that I meet, and that aliveness is such a special quality to me.”

While speaking to Stern, 72, at the time, Morissette considered herself to be “pretty heterosexual” while experimenting with women — an experience she thought culture icon Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) should experience in HBO’s hit show Sex and the City.

“I reached out to them and I said, ‘Might it be a nice time for Carrie to experience a lesbian moment?” Morissette recalled during a September episode of Alex Cooper’s “Call Her Daddy” podcast of her 2000 cameo on the hit series, in which her character kisses Carrie during a game of spin the bottle. “And they said, ‘Why, yes. We were thinking the same thing.’”

During the podcast interview, Morissette detailed her experience of kissing Parker, 61, during the show. (In the episode, Parker’s Carrie is dating a pansexual man who has both ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends — a reality that sent the sex columnist into an existential spiral.)

“I do recall kissing her,” she noted of the pair’s “easy” and “buoyant” on-screen kiss. “It was very pleasant.”
