$800 Rental Car Gets Taken By Repo Man

Social media car rentals are on the rise in Atlanta. Flashy online flyers advertise luxury rides for as low as $55 per day, with no credit checks. Now, drivers are turning to social media for car rentals instead of traditional agencies.

Longtime Lyft driver Dvonte Hampton found himself in a pickle when his $800-per-week rental suddenly vanished while in his possession. 911 dispatch reportedly informed him that a lender had actually repossessed the car.

What’s really going on with these social media car rentals? The Shade Room’s Justin Carter shares what consumers need to know before handing over money to private rental companies on ‘TSR Investigates.’

Dvonte Hampton’s $800 Rental Vehicle Gets Taken By Repo Man

According to Carter, the car that Dvonte Hampton rented was owned by popular social media personality Perez. Perez, who reportedly owns a fleet of rental cars, told Hampton they would have to report the car stolen. However, out of fear of being accused of theft, Hampton decided to call 911 on his own.

“That’s when the 911 operator told me, ‘Um, the car’s been repossessed,’” Hampton recalled to Carter.

Perez reportedly told Carter that he was unaware of why his car had been repossessed. The incident left Hampton feeling “unsettled.”

“And I don’t know if I’m part of a chain — part of a cycle that he’s doing to people: renting out cars and I guess stop paying on them and then go get another one and have someone pay for that one while stop paying on that one,” Hampton described.

More On The Atlanta Rental Car

Per Carter, Hampton allegedly asked Perez to refund him the $113 daily rate he paid just hours before the car was repossessed. However, Perez reportedly refused, alleging Hampton paid for the rental late on several occasions. Additionally, Perez alleged Hampton acquired an $85 speeding ticket.
