‘Musk’ Documentary Secures Global Release Dates Following Distribution Uncertainty

When you are tracking the wild, larger-than-life orbit of the world’s richest tech mogul, few film projects get people talking quite like Alex Gibney’s Musk documentary. This critically praised deep dive has already weathered its fair share of internet chatter and box-office gossip since hitting US screens. But the journey is far from over! After making waves on the international festival circuit and gearing up for its eventual streaming home on HBO, the project is officially expanding its map.

Universal Pictures International has just locked down a staggered foreign release schedule, giving global moviegoers a clear timeline on when they can finally grab some popcorn and catch the ultimate, unfiltered look at Elon Musk’s world on the big screen.

Musk is set for global rollout

Following its domestic distribution via Bleecker Street, which kicked off on October 9 and brought in a domestic tally nearing $730,000, Alex Gibney’s sprawling, nearly four-hour-long biographical feature Musk is officially preparing for its overseas voyage. Universal Pictures International has locked down a staggered foreign theatrical roadmap.

The studio has scheduled the project to land in British cinemas on January 15, followed by German audiences on January 21, Spanish theaters on February 5, French screens on February 17, and an Australian bow on February 25. Additional global territories are also slated to join the rollout down the line.

Addressing chatter across various media circles regarding theater closures and wild conspiracy theories about corporate pressure forcing the film’s early exit from multiplexes, Deadline has clarified that the project’s box-office trajectory follows a standard arthouse and documentary distribution model . After opening in a modest quartet of locations before expanding outward to 472 venues and subsequently tapering down, the film’s natural theatrical lifecycle simply ran its course – a common reality for a monumental documentary runtime.

While distribution blockades get sorted, the doc is on its way  to continue its film festival run.

Musk to make a few more festival stops

Before taking aim at standard multiplexes, Musk built substantial early momentum by making high-profile festival stops at Venice, Toronto, and London. The documentary’s global circuit is far from finished, however, with upcoming autumn appearances scheduled at prominent cinematic showcases including the Lisbon Film Festival, Amsterdam’s IDFA – hailed as the planet’s premier gathering for documentary cinema – and the Stockholm Film Festival. Ultimately, the feature is anchored for a future streaming debut on HBO to court awards-season voters.

Having earned widespread critical praise following its prestigious debut at the Venice Film Festival, Alex Gibney’s ambitious cinematic portrait attempts to decode the complex psychology and monumental global footprint of the planet’s wealthiest individual. The narrative probes deeply into headline-making chapters of his life, examining his prominent political pivot toward the MAGA movement, intense scrutiny surrounding the ambitious Occupy Mars initiative and autonomous Tesla technology, and the complicated personal dynamics he shares with multiple partners and the mothers of his fourteen children.
