When you think of e-books, the first service providers that probably come to mind are Amazon Kindle and Apple Books. These two platforms are near ubiquitous, but they’re far from the only players in the mobile market offering distinct e-reader applications.
Indeed, the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store are filled with e-book software solutions from a myriad of developers, each offering up a unique experience in their own right. Here are six digital reading apps that are decidedly different from the likes of Amazon Kindle and Apple Books.
Libby
Virtual access to your local library
Libby is essentially a digital portal to your local library branch. By inputting your library card credentials, you can easily rent e-books, magazines, and audiobooks at no cost. The app’s interface is streamlined, which I appreciate, and both the reading experience and the audiobook player section are clutter-free. Libby features include a playback speed selector, a sleep timer, bookmarks, a note and highlighter function, and more.
FullReader
A no-nonsense e-book experience
FullReader is a local e-book reader application for Android devices that makes it easy to view and listen to books, magazines, comics, audiobooks, and more. The app supports a vast array of formats, including PDF, DjVu, ePub, txt, doc, docx, rar, zip, 7z, and MP3. FullReader integrates with cloud storage solutions like Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox, and it offers a customizable toolbar interface. The app is free to download and install, with an option to remove ads via a single-time purchase or via recurring subscription payments.
FBReader
A customizable, speedy e-book reader
FBReader is a stylish e-book reader application that offers all the essentials and then some, including support for major e-book formats, cloud sync, and a wide variety of appearance options to customize the in-app reading experience to your liking. The app’s free version allows for up to ten books to be added to your locally saved library, after which a full version can be purchased to unlock full access, which also bundles in a native translation feature.
Kobo
E-books and audiobooks aplenty
Kobo e-readers are popular in their own right, and the official Kobo application makes it easy to browse and consume your purchased Kobo e-books on any modern smart device with ease. There are millions of e-books and audiobooks to sift through, and the app features niceties such as a sleep timer, a Night Mode, a Guest Mode, bookmarks, highlights, note syncing, and Apple CarPlay integration.
Barnes & Noble NOOK
Tons of digital content to choose from
Barnes & Noble NOOK offers a vast array of over four million e-books, graphic novels, comics, manga, and magazines within its digital library, in addition to offering over 300,000 audiobooks to choose from. The app features recommendations, a bestseller list, and a deals section, as well as a customizable user interface with font and page styles to choose from. There’s built-in syncing, custom shelves for added organization, and much more. NOOK is free to download, though content itself is locked behind a paywall.
Google Play Books
Google’s alternative to Kindle et al.
Google’s first-party mobile e-book and audiobook solution, Google Play Books is home to millions of titles, with a library that automatically syncs across devices using your Google Account. You can organize your shelves to personalize your digital library, you can jot down notes that then sync with Google Drive, and you can adjust such things as font, text size, brightness, and more. Google Play Books is free to get started with, though most content within the app is paid.
