Sci-Fi is one of my favorite genres, and I love throwing on a good 4K Blu-ray, so it’s a good fit. Most of the good Sci-Fi is in the format, but there are still some holdouts — I’m looking at you Planet of the Apes. Nevertheless, I can usually find something worth throwing on in my collection, and it applies to more than just movies. I have quite a few TV shows in 4K that I’ve watched, and that includes the Sci-Fi genre. You might be surprised by how many TV shows have made their way over to the format. Sure, most TVs feel like they only get DVD and Blu-ray releases, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find good Sci-Fi options.
Something that surprised me is that a lot of HBO releases make their way to 4K Blu-ray, and that’s good since those shows typically look great on a disc. If you’re somebody looking to cut back on streaming service spending, it’s not a bad idea to wait for the show’s home release. Not only are you getting the best format available, but you could also get a better deal if you pick up your show at a steep discount. These are just four shows that look great in 4K, but I’m sure you can find even more than this.
The Last of Us is a good start
Not a lot of seasons either
The Last of Us might not fall under the typical Sci-Fi umbrella, but I count post-apocalyptic as Sci-Fi, mainly because I’m not sure where else it’d go in this scenario. Nevertheless, The Last of Us looks and sounds great on 4K Blu-ray. This isn’t all that surprising consider that the show looked good on streaming, so there’s no reason it wouldn’t look even better on a disc.
This is a disc that has both Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, so if you have a display and sound system capable of both of those things, you’re in for a treat. Dolby Vision always looks great in shows and movies that have a lot of darkness, and that fits the bill of this one perfectly. You can pick up the first season for under $20 on Amazon at the time of this writing, so there’s a rather low barrier of entry if you haven’t seen the show yet but are interested.
Halo isn’t a great show, but it looks and sounds great
Never finished the fight
The Halo show was filled with ups and downs, and many people would argue it was mostly downs, but I found some things to like about it. The big thing for me was its Atmos soundtrack, and it was so cool to hear Cortana’s voice coming out of my surround speakers. That’s one of the most creative uses of sound I’ve heard from a show or movie, and it was worth picking up the first season for that alone. I did end up watching the second season, but I did that on Paramount+ instead of buying it physically.
Halo ended up getting canceled after the second season, so there’s no telling what the future was going to have in store. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend getting too invested in the story, because it’s always a bummer being left on a cliffhanger. I didn’t mind too much in this case since it’s a middling show, but it’s also one of the best 4K discs when it comes to Sci-Fi TV shows.
Westworld for as long as you want to stick with it
A great-looking show
I’m not sure what drew me to Westworld, but I’m glad that it happened. I only have the first season on 4K Blu-ray, but it came with a cool red metal case, so I have that going for me. The thing about Westworld is you can easily hop off after the first season if you’d like, so it’s very easy to dip your toes in to see if you’d like it.
Like Halo, Westworld has both Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision, so it’s an audio and visual treat. The downside is that this show is just an upscale of a 2K scan, but that doesn’t mean it looks bad. I would say the audio, like a lot of Sci-Fi, is the standout here.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a fun one
One of the best new Treks
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a show I fell off of in recent seasons, but that doesn’t mean it’s not good. I watched about one and a half seasons before stopping, but don’t let that stop you. This is the closest thing we have to return of classic Star Trek, and with the introduction of The Original Series characters, it’s doing a good job of bridging the gap.
This is yet another 4K TV show with a Dolby Vision scan, but sadly, Star Trek doesn’t come with a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. In its place is a DTS-HD 5.1 soundtrack that still sounds good, so don’t let it deter you.
