Resumes vs LinkedIn Profiles

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains why you use a resume under certain circumstances in the LinkedIn profile under others.

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, and I’m back today with more no BS—actually, I’m not sure if it’s resume advice or job search advice, but let me get to the point.

My friend Perry Newman sent over an article he wrote yesterday for LinkedIn about the difference between resumes and your LinkedIn profile. What he said in his article was the difference between a resume and a LinkedIn profile is the difference between hunter and hunted.

A great resume is needed when you’re the hunter, when you’re out there looking for work, where you’re out there aggressively trying to find an organization and connect with them and get yourself into the position where they respond to you.

A LinkedIn profile is for the circumstances where you’re being hunted, where you want an individual firm or recruiter or someone to find you and be turned on to your background and want to reach out to you.

So, when all is said and done, when you’re actively looking for work, you need both. You need a great profile; you need a great resume. Once you’ve landed your position, it’s my opinion the profile is critical. You update that all the time. You make sure that people are aware of the changes that have been going on in your career so that this way you can be hunted into that next opportunity where you’re advantaged.

And I say you’re advantaged because, at the end of the day, the person who gets ahead isn’t always the smartest, they don’t always work the hardest, although those—although those are great qualities to have. People get ahead by being alert to opportunity. Sometimes they’re internal to an organization; most of the time they’re external.

So, when you get an InMail, or an email, or a phone call about an opportunity, it’s kind of like a knock on the door that says opportunity is knocking. Pay attention, and don’t just turn it away.

So, I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you find this helpful. Come over to thebiggamehunter.us, go exploring, because there’s a ton of content there that will help you.

Also want to mention, if we’re not connected on LinkedIn, send a connection request. My page there is linkedin.com/in/thebiggamehunter. I accept connection requests from people worldwide. Also follow my firm, The Big Game Hunter, Inc., on LinkedIn. You’ll get notices when I do new videos, you’ll hear about jobs I’m recruiting for. It’s a good place for you to, you know, very simply hear about some of the content I create, read it, watch it, listen to it as it becomes available.

Final points for you: if your current firm is trying to hire someone, send me an email at jeffaltman@thebiggamehunter.us. Let me know who to contact and whether I should mention your name. I’d want to help your firm staff positions.

Finally, as I said, a resume, a LinkedIn profile, they’re both essential professionally. I critique them; I don’t write them. If you want to order a critique from me of either or both, you can find out more about it at my website. I’d be happy to help you.

I’m Jeff Altman. Have a great day.
