Indiana Fever fire GM after Caitlin Clark & Co. fail to reach WNBA playoff semis amid growing impatience from fans

The Indiana Fever have cut ties with general manager Amber Cox, according to multiple reports.

The Daily Mail has reached out to team spokespeople for confirmation. The Athletic was the first to report Cox’s firing, which follows team president Kelly Krauskopf’s decision to step down earlier Friday.

The house cleaning comes after a disappointing sixth-place finish and a first-round playoff exit at the hands of the Las Vegas Aces.

Head coach Stephanie White remains in her position with one year left on her contract. She took over in 2025 as star guard Caitlin Clark was entering her second WNBA season.

Clark, a three-time All-Star, has reached the playoffs in all three seasons of her young career, but has yet to advance beyond the WNBA semifinals.

Indiana did have the highest-scoring offense in league history in 2026, thanks to a core of Clark, Kelsey Mitchell and Aliyah Boston. Unfortunately, the Fever struggled defensively, allowing 90.4 points a game, which was worse than all but four teams.

What’s worse, Mitchell is now an unrestricted free agent and is expected to seek the best offer she can find on the open market.

The former Big East Conference commissioner, Cox took over the job in 2024 following Clark’s rookie season.

She recently defended the team’s fans against allegations of inappropriate behavior. Most recently, a fan seated courtside in Indianapolis got into a furious confrontation with the Aces’ A’ja Wilson during a playoff game.

‘The attacks on our fanbase have no basis in reality, and they need to stop,’ Cox said, ‘especially with members of the media… I’m talking about media who have never been to a game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

‘Every organization in the league, every organization throughout professional sports, all the way down to youth rec leagues, have to deal with occasional bad behavior from spectators. And anyone who crosses the line in an arena or online needs to be held accountable. I want to be really clear about that. There is a line, and people need to be held accountable if they cross it.’

Wilson claimed the Fever fan stepped towards her while pointing, which she called ‘unacceptable’ behavior from a fan during a game.

The decision was received fairly well among impatient Fever fans, who also pushed the organization to cut ties with White as well.

‘That’s a good start,’ wrote one Fever fan.

‘Stephanie White,’ another followed, ‘you’re a** is next.’

One fan wrote: ‘By my count there needs to be one more firing.’
