A16z drops the crypto label as it expands into AI and emerging tech

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), one of crypto’s most influential venture capital backers, is dropping “crypto” from the name of its investment arm and expanding into artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies, becoming the latest major crypto investor to broaden its focus.

The Silicon Valley firm is renaming its a16z Crypto fund to a16z Frontier, targeting startups developing technologies and markets that may take years to mature, general partner Chris Dixon said in a Thursday blog post.

The move doesn’t mean a16z is abandoning digital assets. The firm will continue backing crypto companies and advocating for crypto regulation, Dixon said.

“This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation,” he wrote.

The VC giant had played a significant role in shaping the crypto industry. An early Coinbase investor, the firm also backed major blockchain projects including Solana (SOL) and decentralized exchange Uniswap (UNI), while pouring billions into crypto startups and becoming a prominent voice in U.S. policy debates.

The company’s decision is the latest example of a broader pivot among venture capital firms that made their names in crypto but are now looking beyond digital assets.
