NYC student, 19, who cops say was raped by man who gave her tainted cocaine that killed her is pictured for first time

A young Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student has been pictured for the first time after she was allegedly raped and left to die of a drug overdose in her dorm.

Annabel Richter, 19, died in the all-female Nagler Hall dorm at the prestigious Manhattan fashion college in March after buying what she believed to be cocaine from a drug dealer.

The powder she snorted was actually fentanyl, with the young Brazilian student suffering a fatal overdose after consuming it.

Her alleged killers, one of whom is also said to have raped her while she was intoxicated,  were charged by federal prosecutors earlier this week.

One former FIT student who was at the college when Richter died told the Daily Mail that Richter’s parents made a mercy dash after learning she had taken an overdose but did not make it in time to say goodbye.

‘By the time her parents were flying over after learning what happened, she had already passed away,’ the student said.

The death sent shockwaves through the college community, but students were initially given little information about what had happened.

‘We got one email saying something had happened, but it didn’t really give any information. It just referred to a tragedy,’ the Daily Mail’s source said.

The email communicated there had been a medical emergency in Nagler Hall and emergency personnel could still be present in response to the situation.

Annabel Richter, 19, was from Brazil and a first-year student in the Advertising and Marketing Communications program at the Fashion Institute of Technology.

‘The email was very vague. It said the school was there to help anyone who might need counseling.’

Rumors about cocaine also circulated on campus after the tragedy. The source said students heard Richter met the man through Tinder.

The surviving woman from that night was Richter’s roommate, who subsequently withdrew from FIT and who has not been identified.

The Daily Mail’s source said that while the roommate also ingested fentanyl, Richter did much more.

Richter’s family paid tribute to the 19-year-old in an Instagram post on March 25, inviting friends and students to a vigil in New York City.

‘It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our daughter Annabel, so dearly loved by all of us. Her light remains alive in our hearts. Forever.

We are holding a Vigil for her in New York City this Thursday the 26th at 12PM. Please contact me if you would like to attend and I will send you information,’ read the post.

Richter was a first-year student in the Advertising and Marketing Communications program and a beloved student among many. Students who couldn’t attend the vigil were able to watch via livestream.

The school also highlighted the family would be collecting messages from friends for a memory book to be created in her honor.

The school also identified Annabel Richter in an email to students and faculty along with the campus vigil in partnership with her family.

The allegations against the suspects, Moises Freire and Brian Peralta Cabrera, were laid out in a federal indictment filed in the Southern District of New York earlier this week. Both are charged with participating in a fentanyl distribution conspiracy.

Prosecutors allege Freire obtained fentanyl from Peralta Cabrera before bringing the drug to the dorm on March 18, where Richter and another female student suffered acute fentanyl poisoning.

The indictment alleges Freire told Peralta Cabrera he wanted drugs that would last the entire night and were strong enough to make the women addicted, describing that prospect as a ‘win-win situation.’

Freire is accused of raping Richter while she was suffering from acute fentanyl intoxication. While incapacitated, Freire reportedly snapped photographs of Richter from the waist down and texted his friends to brag that the 19-year-old was ‘completely unconscious’ throughout.

The teen’s decision to take naked photos of the girl after she overdosed and was sexually assaulted, then send them to his friends, bears a disturbing resemblance to the Cornell 7 case, which also raised questions about sexual violence, humiliation and the role of other young men.

Richter never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at a hospital on March 21, according to the indictment.

The second woman suffered serious bodily injury but survived after receiving emergency medical treatment.

Toxicology reports found fentanyl in both women’s systems, with no cocaine detected, prosecutors said.

Following news of the federal charges, the college sent another email addressing the case.

President Jason S Schupbach reiterated the school’s commitment to its safety guidelines and reminded students that counseling and other support services remained available.

‘As you are aware, we lost a beloved member of the FIT community earlier this year. During those most difficult of days, I was grateful for how we came together as a community for the affected families.

‘As this case moves forward, FIT will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement and the legal system. We will be providing additional information as it becomes available, while respecting the necessary,’ wrote Schupbach.

He also noted that out of an abundance of caution, the school would be increasing security presence on campus in anticipation of increased public attention on FIT.

The Daily Mail has contacted the FIT and attorneys for both defendants for comment.
