Urgent recall for milk sold in Australia over contamination concerns: ‘May cause illness if consumed’

An urgent recall has been issued for Tweedvale Dairies reduced-fat milk over fears it may be contaminated with E. coli bacteria.

The recall covers one-litre and two-litre bottles with a use-by date of October 21, 2026, sold through independent retailers, including IGA stores.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has advised consumers not to drink the recalled milk and to return it to the store where it was purchased for a full refund.

‘Food products contaminated with microbial (E. coli) may cause illness if consumed.’

E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of people and animals. Although most strains are harmless, some can cause illness.

Harmful strains can spread through contaminated food or water and cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and vomiting. In some cases, they can also cause bloody diarrhoea. E. coli can also cause urinary tract infections if the bacteria enter the urinary system.

SA Health says some E. coli infections can become serious, particularly in young children and older people, and warns that symptoms may take several days to appear.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand said pathogenic E. coli could spread through contaminated food or water, including when food comes into contact with animal faeces or unclean equipment during production or handling.

Anyone who has consumed the recalled milk and is concerned about their health should seek medical advice.
