Clean the Sky – Rare Earth-Free Motor Manufacturing

Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

Greaves Cotton Limited and Chara Technologies have entered into a strategic collaboration to develop and manufacture sustainable rare‐earth‐free electric motors for mobility applications. Under this partnership, Greaves Cotton will produce synchronous reluctance motors and their controllers at its facility in Shendra, Aurangabad. The new motor technology, which eliminates the need for rare-earth magnets, is designed to address supply chain vulnerabilities while reducing the environmental impact associated with sourcing rare-earth elements. The technology is reported to offer energy savings of up to 50% and approximately a 30% reduction in CO₂ emissions compared to conventional designs.

This collaboration reflects a broader industry trend toward enhancing supply chain resilience and advancing environmentally friendly mobility solutions. Greaves Cotton leverages its extensive engineering background and large-scale production capabilities, while Chara Technologies contributes its innovation in motor design and sustainable materials. The initiative is expected to support a range of electric mobility applications—including L5 electric three-wheelers, golf carts, and compact four-wheelers—while aligning with global efforts to minimize dependence on scarce resources and promote cleaner, energy-efficient transportation technologies.
