Carlton player reportedly hospitalised with complications linked to alleged recreational drug use

A Carlton player has reportedly been hospitalised after suffering complications from allegedly taking recreational drugs.

Life support paramedics attended a house in South Yarra on Saturday, where a man in his 20s was taken to hospital in a stable condition with upper body injuries, The Herald Sun reported.

The player had suffered what his teammates believed was a ‘seizure or reaction’, the publication said.

It is understood another player attended the hospital on Saturday night to provide support.

On Sunday, a third Carlton player also attended hospital, however it is understood this was unrelated to the issue surrounding his teammate.

The third player told friends he had dropped his toothbrush in the shower and hit his head on a soap container while picking it up, requiring several stitches, the Herald Sun reported.

An earlier report from 7News said at least three players had been hospitalised.

A revised illicit drugs policy was announced by AFL and the AFL Players’ Association in March.

At the time, it was claimed the policy will be the ‘most comprehensive health-led illicit drugs policy in Australian sport’. The policy was due to begin during the 2026-2027 off-season.

Daily Mail has approached Carlton Football Club for comment.
