Shocking moment Aussie teen jet ski riders allegedly capsize tinnie carrying two young boys as police warn of possible charges

Two teenagers are facing possible charges after allegedly circling and spraying a tinnie carrying two boys on the Gold Coast, causing it to capsize.

Footage captured by witness Robert Collin allegedly showed the boys, aged 15 and 16, repeatedly circling a tinnie carrying another two boys, aged 10 and 14, on the Nerang River near Surfers Paradise on Saturday afternoon.

The tinnie was struck by waves allegedly generated by the jet skis before it capsized, appearing to throw the two boys into the water.

‘The jet-skis were very aggressive towards the tinnie and didn’t bother to see if the two young victims were ok after rolling the boat,’ Mr Collin told the Gold Coast Bulletin.

‘The propeller was still spinning and the kids could have easily been trapped or knocked out and drowned.’

Police said the boys had been fishing on the river when the teenage jet ski riders allegedly began circling and spraying their boat.

‘Our young victims were out in their boat for a day of fishing when they were randomly targeted by jetski riders,’ acting Senior Sergeant Shannon Gray told Today.

‘They were circled and they were sprayed which ultimately led to their boat capsizing and the young fellas going into the water.

‘[Their boat was] damaged and the engine wouldn’t start following the incident.’

He said those involved were not known to each other and that the children were not injured, but ‘shaken’.

Acting Senior Sergeant Gray described the teenagers’ behaviour as ‘incredibly dangerous’ and outlined the charges they could face.

‘They’ve caused a marine incident,’ he said.

‘They’ve assaulted the two juveniles in the vessel, damaged their property, and were freestyling in a prohibited area.

‘Depending on their history… anything from a juvenile caution, a fine or a court appearance.’

He said police had identified the teenage riders and would speak to them about the incident.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate also condemned the teenagers’ alleged actions, describing them as ‘unfathomable’ at a press conference on Tuesday.

Tate added he would be looking to improve security in the area.

‘I’ll be talking to Queensland Police, specifically the water police, to see if they have enough resources,’ he said.

‘We might look at putting more cameras so we can get prosecutions, which would be a deterrent.’

Daily Mail has contacted Queensland Police for comment.
