Original content has been the main priority of Apple TV ever since it launched in 2019. Over the years, the service has offered users its own list of acclaimed TV shows like Severance, Pluribus, The Studio, Widow’s Bay, and Ted Lasso. It has also produced and distributed popular original films such as F1, Killers of the Flower Moon, and CODA. While it lets subscribers stream several movies not produced by Apple, they still have to pay an additional fee.
However, the platform features a “Great Movies Now on Apple TV” section, where subscribers can stream a select few outside movies for free. Like many other streaming services, Apple TV’s list of movies changes each month. Now that October has arrived, so have many more must-see movies.

Several popular films are now free on Apple TV
Don’t miss out on these must-see movies
Like last month’s selection, Apple TV’s list of licensed movies has no apparent theme. Though these films seem very different, they are all popular with audiences in theaters or are simply acclaimed classics. According to MacRumors, the 13 new movies available in the U.S. as of October 1 include:
My personal favorites on this list include 28 Days Later, Good Will Hunting, Taxi Driver, and Tropic Thunder. While many of these movies are intense thrillers, 28 Days Later is a straight-up scary zombie movie that is perfect viewing for horror fans this Halloween.
With titles directed by Danny Boyle, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, and Ben Stiller, Apple TV has delivered a variety of must-see movies this month. Additionally, the platform retains these movies from its previous selection: A Beautiful Mind, A League of Their Own, Definitely Maybe, I Robot, Master and Commander, The Rookie, and The Sixth Sense.
The list of available films differs by country. For instance, subscribers in Canada have access to these movies instead:
- Catch Me If You Can
- Ford v Ferrari
- Godzilla
- Inception
- Jurassic Park
- Jurassic World
- Little Miss Sunshine
- Rocketman
- Spider-Man: Far From Home
- Spider-Man: Homecoming
- The Martian
- The Proposal
- The Social Network
- The Town
- War of the Worlds
Though Canada’s selection is very different, it features many noteworthy hits, with Inception, Jurassic Park, and The Social Network as my top choices.
How can I subscribe to Apple TV?
Films are free, for a price
Only people who already subscribe to Apple TV can access its list of “Great Movies.” You can sign up by going to the Apple TV website and clicking “Sign In” or “Start Free Trial.” Following a price increase in August, Apple TV costs $14.99 per month, with a 7-day free trial for new users. While you can buy Apple TV individually, you can also bundle it with a Peacock subscription for 30% off at $17.99.
Since you can rent some of the movies that are free on Apple TV for about $4 on Prime Video, you may understandably question the need to spend $15 to sign up for the former. Overall, the platform’s list of free, recognizable titles seems like an added bonus to gain more subscribers and drive them toward more original content.
This strategy is nothing new, as services like Netflix and HBO Max offer paid subscribers a wide selection of classic and original movies for no additional cost. Since Apple TV’s list of free films is short and limited, it presents itself as an exclusive deal that audiences don’t want to miss out on. Although the subscription price is high, Apple TV’s list of “Great Movies” still offers users a wider range and more benefits in its streaming choices.
