A teenage volleyballer has been identified as one of three people killed in a three-vehicle crash in regional Victoria. 

Tenesha Fieldsend, 14, was on her way home from a bronze medal-winning volleyball competition in Horsham when the Mitsubishi Triton she was travelling in crashed on the Western Highway near Ledcourt, about 200km north-west of Melbourne, on Sunday. 

Police said Ms Fieldsend’s brother, a 17-year-old learner-driver, had been driving the family’s Triton when it crashed into the side of a truck, before hitting another car.

A 43-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl were also in the Triton.  

The woman was not injured, while the learner driver and 11-year-old were taken to hospital with minor injuries. 

The Latrobe Valley Volleyball player suffered critical injuries in the crash and later died in hospital. 

‘Tenesha was a much-loved part of our sporting community and will be sadly missed by her teammates, coaches, friends and our wider volleyball members,’ a club spokesman said.

‘It feels extra special that she was part of our bronze medal winning team at the Volleyball Victoria Junior Country Championships in Horsham over the weekend.

Detective Acting Sergeant Leigh Miller told reporters on Sunday, ‘Sadly, two people in the third vehicle are both deceased.’

‘The car has collided into the side of a truck and then collided with a third vehicle, being another car.

‘It’s the holiday period. It was getting late in the afternoon, traffic was really busy, people were heading home.’

He said two occupants of the third vehicle, an MG ZS SUV, died at the scene.

The truck driver, 29, escaped injury and remained at the scene.

‘At this stage we don’t know why the collision has occurred, but what we will be investigating is whether fatigue or distraction, whether speed is involved,’ Sergeant Miller said.

‘We want to make sure that everyone gets home safely … People aren’t going home and it’s a sad and tragic event.’

Pictures from the accident show one of the cars on its roof, while emergency workers could be seen working on another vehicle with its front end smashed in.

Investigations are ongoing.
