It really does feel like everything has gone up in price this year, so whenever there’s an opportunity to snag something for free, I usually take it. And that’s especially true when it comes to Kindle e-books.
If you’re an e-book collector who enjoys reading on a Kindle, there’s a way to claim two free Kindle e-books before the end of September, and it’s all thanks to Amazon’s First Reads program.
Never heard of First Reads? It’s a monthly program Amazon runs that offers early access to a curated selection of new and upcoming Kindle e-books. Each month, Prime members can choose one free e-book from this selection, plus a bonus short story, totaling two free Kindle e-books.
The big caveat here is that you need to be a Prime member to claim the free e-books. However, even if you aren’t a Prime member, you can still check out all the new books Amazon is offering through First Reads and buy one for $2. That’s unfortunately not free, but it’s still a pretty good deal for a new Kindle e-book.

For September, Amazon is offering eight e-books through First Reads to browse and choose from, covering a variety of genres, including suspense, historical fiction, thrillers, romance, mystery, and family drama.

As a reminder, as a Prime member, you can choose one book from the list of titles above to get for free and keep forever in your Kindle library. If you don’t have Prime, choosing one of the books costs $2.
Additionally, Prime members can claim a bonus short read for free this September: The Back Bedroom, a true-crime short story by Gregg Olsen.
I’ve always felt that the free books Amazon offers through First Reads are one of Prime’s most underrated benefits. If you already pay for Prime every month and regularly read on a Kindle device or through the Kindle app, it’s definitely worth checking out so you can snag some free e-books.
