Beleaguered Lancashire has cancelled its end of season awards party – as a disastrous campaign heads towards a miserable conclusion.

On Saturday, Daily Mail Sport published a damning special report on the staggering decline of one of English cricket’s major forces, highlighting a catalogue of spectacular behind-the-scenes failures and a club seemingly at war with its members.

On Monday, it announced that director of cricket performance Mark Chilton, who has presided over an era of underachievement for the men’s team, would be leaving the county, along with director of women’s cricket David Thorley.

With one game of the season remaining Lancashire find themselves seventh in Division Two of the County Championship and could end up with the wooden spoon for the first time should results go against them and they end up bottom.

The awards evening was scheduled for this Sunday at The Point, one of the conferencing facilities at Old Trafford.

Over a drinks reception and three-course meal guests were due to receive a welcome from under-fire Chair Dame Sarah Storey.

Clouds have been gathering over Lancashire and Old Trafford for some time with the team struggling in Division Two of the County Championship

Paralympic legend Storey, as our piece highlighted, has raised eyebrows with some of her decision making, including her appearance on Strictly Come Dancing, amid a backdrop of a county in turmoil.

An advert for the event on Lancashire’s website has since been removed.

Aside from Chilton and Thorley, controversial chief executive Daniel Gidney will also depart after 14 years in the role. Gidney has received searing criticism amid accusations that cricket has fallen by the wayside during his tenure, as the business improved its commercial standing thanks to the transformation of the ground into an events-hosting and concert facility.

He will be replaced by Richard Kenyon, the former Nottinghamshire CC and Everton exec.

Lancashire declined to comment.
