The Academy Award winner behind some of the best and most-loved animations of recent history – including The Iron Giant, Ratatouille, and The Incredibles – is returning with his first new animated feature film in almost a decade.
The sci-fi noir film is set in the fictional supercity of Metropia, in an alternate future as seen from 1939. We follow the private investigator, Raymond Gunn, as he gets drawn into a convoluted case involving aliens, murder, and a media star called Venus Nova.
Brad Bird has been ruminating on this project for a long, long time. In fact, Ray Gunn has existed in the his mind for over three decades. The idea remains fundamentally the same as that original thought, as Brad explained: “It was always meant to be a blend of sci-fi and classic detective movies from the ’40s. The elevator pitch I came up with is The Maltese Falcon meets Buck Rogers.”
The film stars: Sam Rockwell as Raymond Gunn.
Tom Waits plays a one-eyed alien named Eyera, Ray’s most trusted compatriot.
Also voicing characters are Matt Berry, John Ratzenberger, Kathryn Hunter, Bobby Cannavale, Alan Tudyk, Michael Chernus, and Patton Oswalt.
Ray Gunn will l have its World Premiere at London Film Festival before being available for streaming globally from December 18th on Netflix.
