This iOS 27 feature is a bigger deal than Apple is letting on


Every time Apple reveals a major software update, someone at the company has to triage what it’s going to showcase to the public. There are usually too many changes to fit them all into a two-hour event, let alone a five- or 10-minute montage, and there’s no exception with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. Apple certainly wasn’t going to waste its time talking about small tweaks when it’s gearing Siri AI to go head-to-head with Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

One tweak that might’ve been unfairly sidelined is Connectivity Assist. It’s not revolutionary, but it could matter a great deal to you if, like me, you often run into trouble with Wi-Fi connectivity.

What does Connectivity Assist do, and why does that matter?

It’s easiest to explain Connectivity Assist by comparing it with its predecessor, Wi-Fi Assist. That feature actually debuted way back in 2015 with iOS 9, and was meant to cope with a recurring problem for iPhones and iPads: the borders of Wi-Fi range. You’ve no doubt been in a situation where you were technically connected to a Wi-Fi router, but the signal was so weak or sporadic that it was all but useless. For me, that’s most likely to happen when I’m trying to get music or directions in my driveway. You might be dealing with the problem on restaurant patios, or while waiting for ridesharing outside an airport terminal.

With Wi-Fi Assist active, a device was able to detect those scenarios, and kick you over to cellular in the hopes of a reliable connection. This did seem to help me occasionally. Honestly, however, it’s hard to know for certain, because there were instances in which I was connected to Wi-Fi, but still struggling despite having 4G or 5G available.

Connectivity Assist is largely a rebranding of Wi-Fi Assist, but with at least one important difference: according to Apple, it can exploit cellular “in addition” to Wi-Fi, rather than just switching over. It may also kick in more aggressively, as evidenced by “Intelligent Connectivity” notifications popping up during iOS 27 beta testing. That would align with Apple’s promise of better data transitions during the WWDC 2026 keynote in June.

While Apple is utterly vague on the details of the new tech, it’s easy to check that it’s active. If you open up Settings -> Wi-Fi and scroll down to Connectivity Assist, you’ll see a gauge of how many megabytes or gigabytes it’s using. After the first day with iOS 27 on my iPhone 16 Pro, it was already up to 174MB, presumably because I was in a hotel where even the in-suite connection was rough.

Are there any downsides to Connectivity Assist?

You’ve probably already guessed at one: data caps. If you’re coping with flaky Wi-Fi on a daily basis, there’s the risk of exceeding the limits of your cellular plan, leading to throttling or extra fees. Consider my own situation. On a one-off basis,174MB isn’t a lot. But if that amount accumulated every workday, it would total nearly 3.5GB per month, creating serious issues if my phone was still on a budget plan, or if I’d been doing a lot of streaming or tethering. Coping with a bad connection for a few minutes a day might be preferable to being throttled to 4G.

There’s also the question of consistency. There’s no way of scrutinizing Apple’s decision tree, so hypothetically, there could be moments when you’d be better served by a little patience with Wi-Fi, or fully embracing cellular. I’m not saying this is definitely happening. Having traveled through rural Texas and the Canadian Prairies, though, I know full well that there are locations where switching to cellular wouldn’t help much.

Realistically, I’d recommend leaving Connectivity Assist on, which it should be if you previously had Wi-Fi Assist active. Apple notes that there are some safeguards in place, too. The feature is disabled whenever Low Power Mode is active, so it shouldn’t kill your battery. As for those data caps, Assist is blocked during international roaming, and some third-party audio and video apps restrict usage too. Your iPhone or iPad won’t fall on a sword to make sure you can stream Blade Runner.

If you notice that Connectivity Assist is devouring an alarming amount of data, there may be bigger fish to fry. You certainly shouldn’t need it at home. Consider upgrading to a mesh Wi-Fi system, expanding your current mesh, or simply moving a standalone router closer to where your signal drops off. You should also be thinking about interference. Materials like metal and concrete can block signals outright, and you should never, ever stuff a router in a drawer, closet, or cabinet. You’re hampering signals before they’ve even traveled a few feet.
