Video feeds come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and it can be confusing trying to wrap your head around each individual resolution and aspect ratio. One particularly head-scratching example is 4K Ultra HD, otherwise known as 4K UHD. As it turns out, 4K and UHD are actually two separate, distinct resolutions, even though they’re often lumped together under a single unified banner.
4K and UHD each represent entirely different (albeit closely related) video resolutions. Here’s the lowdown on how these two resolutions compare with one another, why they exist as two separate entities, why they’re often used interchangeably, and which one to look for when making a purchasing decision. The differences here are minute on the surface, but there’s more to it than initially meets the eye.
4K vs UHD resolution: what’s the difference?
It all comes down to pixels
To start with, 4K resolution in its true form has a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 pixels. This differs from Ultra HD, which features a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels. In other words, 4K has a slightly higher resolution than UHD, though the difference is fairly minor in the grand scheme of things. UHD itself has four times the pixels of a standard 1080p Full HD picture (1,920 x 1,080 pixels), which is part of why it’s often referred to as 4K colloquially.
By and large, if a television set, computer monitor, or other display is being marketed as 4K, it’s actually UHD. UHD’s resolution equates to a 16:9 standard widescreen aspect ratio, which differs from true 4K’s 256:135 or 1.9:1 aspect ratio. True 4K is slightly wider on the whole, making for a more cinematic visual experience. It’s for this reason that 4K is used in movie theaters, with its roots being in the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) specification.
Consumer electronics manufacturers tend to use 4K as a catch-all marketing phrase for Ultra HD, even though it’s technically an inaccuracy. Now, the difference in resolution is small enough that it doesn’t impact visual clarity when looking at a picture from an average viewing distance, but the difference in aspect ratio is certainly impactful within the context of films and television shows.

To add another wrinkle to the situation, there exists a dedicated Ultra HD Premium specification that ropes in increased color depth and higher dynamic range (HDR), while remaining at the consumer-oriented 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. Of course, true 4K can also be paired with more colors and with HDR, though it doesn’t have any relation to Ultra HD Premium. 4K and UHD on their own strictly refer to resolution, and not the other visual technologies that come part and parcel with modern displays.
To make matters slightly more confusing, 8K resolution — which is 7,680 x 4,320 pixels — is often referred to as Ultra HD, too. 8K resolution offers four times the amount of pixels as 4K, as opposed to four times the amount of pixels as standard UHD. This resolution confusion is difficult to come to grips with, but, for better or worse, 8K panels have yet to achieve mainstream market appeal yet, anyway.
Ultimately, if you’re in the market for a new 4K TV or monitor, you’re actually shopping for one of a variety of UHD-clad display panels. True 4K panels, with their cinematic aspect ratios and all, aren’t as readily available on the consumer market. Likewise, 4K streaming services are actually of the UHD resolution variety, and 4K UHD Blu-ray discs feature UHD resolution video. Even though the two resolutions are used interchangeably within the industry, the difference between the two is still noteworthy and worth taking stock of.
