On the surface, these discs are fairly antiquated by 2026 standards, barely holding a candle to the higher resolution of 4K Ultra HD (UHD) Blu-ray discs.
While it might be tempting to replace all your older discs with their 4K UHD Blu-ray counterparts for superior playback on 4K UHD television sets, this isn’t always strictly necessary. With the help of 4K upscaling technology, in fact, your existing movie and TV show library can look almost as crystal clear as any other brand new 4K UHD disc would.
What is 4K upscaling technology?
In short, 4K UHD upscaling uses mathematical algorithms to artificially boost the resolution of lower-quality video captures. To achieve this, videos are stretched out to fit the higher resolution screen in question, with new pixels intelligently added into the mix to add sharpness and detail.

As a general rule of thumb, more expensive equipment is more competent at upscaling, with dedicated 4K UHD players doing a better job at translating older content into 4K UHD than the average mid-range TV set.

It’s worth noting that upscaling can never truly compare with the quality of native 4K. In other words, a movie or TV show shot natively in 4K will offer maximum picture quality that upscaled 1080p can’t quite measure up to in all instances. Additionally, the lower the starting resolution, the more visual artifacts will exist in the upscaled video. So, then, DVD upscaling is less one-to-one than Blu-ray upscaling is.
